Strictly Come Dancing 2015: musicals week

The annual quarter-final themed week. At least it’s one I can abide by.

We begin with a professional dance (with the contestants joining in) to ‘That’s Entertainment’, about par for this week. I’d expect nothing less. And what a fabulous opener it was.

Georgia May Foote and Giovanni Pernice – Foxtrot to the theme from ‘Beauty in the Beast’

A really beautiful routine from a charming couple. Flowing movement, lovely techniques and splendid lines. A really great song and theme as well. HOWEVER, I missed bits of the routine because HUMANS DRESSED AS CANDLESTICKS AND TEAPOTS BLOCKED THE VIEW. ?????????????? Who signed off on that?! Get to the back!

Judges: Craig 9, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 36/40

Anita Rani and Gleb Savchenko – Argentine Tango to ‘Cell Block Tango’ from Chicago

Really not a great routine for Anita as her wobbly tendencies were exposed and Gleb expected too much of her, yet again. Gleb put loads of faff and lifts in though which was a shame. Such a big stage production – the perils of theme week.

Judges: Craig 6, Darcey 8, Len 9, Bruno 8 = 31/40

Kellie Bright and Kevin Clifton – Viennese Waltz to ‘Oom Pah Pah’ from Oliver

I don’t even know what this was supposed to be if I am deadly honest. Messy, loud and stompy. The moves felt disconnected and theme took over 100% and then some. In parts, though, Kellie’s footwork was on point even if her frame was a little fragmented.

Judges: Craig 9, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 36/40

Jay McGuiness and Aliona Vilani – Rumba to  ‘Falling Slowly’ from Once

Nice to see a Rumba routine packed with Rumba content, something of a rarity these days. The theme was toned down and that allowed focus on the couple themselves. An opportunity to witness some lovely technique. However, expression…..none.

Judges: Craig 9, Darcey 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 = 39/40

Katie Derham and Anton Du Beke – Foxtrot to ‘Maybe This Time’ from Cabaret

A perfect example of how to blend a theme with a traditional routine. Lots of choreography to watch and a lovely showcase of Katie’s strengths.

Judges: Craig 8, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 35/40

Helen George and Aljaz Skorjanec – Paso Doble to  ‘At The End Of The Day’ from Les Miserables

I love the Paso and I’m gutted such an amazing dancer got lumped with it on a theme week. All choreography was lost because the floor was way too busy to keep eyes on. The music, strangely, worked but it was just so hard to get into the dance. And Helen is such a strong dancer. Such a shame. Maybe I’ll rewatch it and update this bit.

Judges: Craig 8, Darcey 8, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 34/40
