Strictly 2015: launch show

The 13th series of BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing kicked off this evening with a sparkly spectacular.

The 75 minute programme – recorded Wednesday – revealed the pairings for the competition were revealed and we were treated to our first look at the new cast.

The pairings for the 2015 series are as follows (in the order they were announced):

  2. Iwan Thomas and Ola Jordan
  3. Jay McGuiness and Aliona Vilani
  4. Jeremy Vine and Karen Clifton
  5. Helen George and Aljaž Skorjanec
  6. Jamelia and Tristan MacManus
  7. Georgia May Foote and Giovanni Pernice
  8. Kirsty Gallacher and Brendan Cole
  9. Anthony Ogogo and Otlile Mabuse
  10. Daniel O’Donnell and Kristina Rihanoff
  11. Peter Andre and Janette Manrara
  12. Anita Rani and Gleb Savchenko
  13. Kellie Bright and Kevin Clifton
  14. Katie Derham and Anton du Beke
  15. Carol Kirkwood and Pasha Kovalev

What else?

The opener to ‘Dancing in the Street’ and ‘Locomotion’ featured the train of dubious origin that has been in the news all week after a redtop discovered it was used in a porn movie. You can google this at your own peril – in this silly season, it spewed out some right odd stories.

Jess Glynne performed accompanied by the gorgeous Tristan. Oh, and Aliona. Also, Aljaž and Ola. The problem is, I wasn’t really watching it because I was too busy typing this. Bit of a fail, really.

The three new pros – Gleb, Oti and Giovanni – were introduced in a superhero theme montage, ending up in the studio with the rest of the professionals in a furiously fast number. With smoke. There was smoke.

Last year’s champion Caroline Flack came back to reunite with Pasha Kovalev and performed their salsa.

Soul legend Gregory Porter performed ‘Puttin’ on The Ritz’ with resident spare pro Joanne Clifton featuring with Brendan, Kristina and Natalie.

The group dance – backed by Jess Glynne – was not a total shambles this year. Too early to tell much. Nobody looked awful, that’s a first.

Strictly Come Dancing live shows kick off on Friday 25th September (I should suspect 9pm) and continue on Saturday 26th.
