Strictly Come Dancing 2013: week eight

We open with the stupid VT of everybody who lives in Blackpool shouting about how happy they are the show is ‘back’ (where’s it been?). Then an opening number featuring the infant contingent of Blackpool which was sweet, cute and made me sad that I never got into dancing at a really young age. Everything else was a bit weird, though. Good weird though. Talented. Colourful. Did we tell you we’re in Blackpool?

Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Brendan Cole – Quickstep to ‘The Lady is a Tramp’ (Shirley Bassey)

With half of IKEA and some other male dancers (butlers?) on stage with them, Sophie looks radiant as she hops and skips (not literally) around the floor in a theatrical Quickstep which left me a bit out of breath watching it.

My score: 8

Actual score: Craig 7, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 34/40

Patrick Robinson and Anya Garnis – Samba to ‘Copacabana’ (Barry Manilow)

You know, we just won’t mention that wardrobe malfunction sending it all a bit haywire really – anyway, it was Anya’s problem. Poor woman, I like her. But Patrick was good – very fast and rhythmic. Not sure he’s the best male but he’s certainly worth high marks.

My score: 7

Actual score: Craig 8, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 35/40

Ben Cohen and Kristina Rihanoff – American Smooth to ‘Fallin’’ (Alicia Keys)

Got a bit lost with the other dancers on the floor throughout – they’re sort of all annoying me a lot. But Ben back in ballroom is beautiful and graceful. You can see just how hard he’s trying as well, I just wonder if the public are behind him because you know, his shirt is on.

My score: 8

Actual score: Craig 8, Darcey 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 = 32/40

Ashley Taylor Dawson and Ola Jordan – Paso Doble to ‘You Give Love a Bad Name’ (Bon Jovi)

The pretty one and the Frisco kid don the dance floor for a Paso Doble with help from two random men (not from the audience I’m assuming, given those moves). Cape work – what we saw of it – was good, floor spins were nicely executed and the sections in hold were strong and fiery. But it missed that fabulousness that the past few weeks had.

My score: 8

Actual score: Craig 8, Darcey 9, Len 9, Bruno 9 = 35/40

Fiona Fullerton and Anton Du Beke – American Smooth to ‘Come Fly With Me’ (Frank Sinatra)

I really wish these backing dancers would do one.

Bit laboured, bit slow but it had an air of glamour to the whole thing which overall made it pretty enjoyable. Think we may be seeing it again, though.

My score: 6

Actual score: Craig 6, Darcey 7, Len 8, Bruno 8 = 29/40

Abbey Clancy and Aljaž Skorjanec – Quickstep to ‘Walking On Sunshine’ (Katrina and The Waves)

Well, at least their props aren’t alive.

Fun, fast and bouncy from Abbey and Aljaž. Lots of technique, massive style and a good partnership between the two of them.

My score: 8

Actual score: Craig 7, Darcey 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 = 37/40

Mark Benton and Iveta Lukosiute – Jive to ‘You Can’t Stop the Beat’ (Hairspray)

I actually really enjoyed that! Mark looked right at home – maybe because he’s in Hairspray anyway – but his kicks were actually alright, it flowed and it was jolly! He’s not technically there but…I love the head teacher from Britannia High!

My score: 6

Actual score: Craig 5, Darcey 8, Len 8, Bruno 8 = 29/40

Susanna Reid and Kevin Clifton – Paso Doble to ‘Los Toreadors’ (Carmen)

WOW! It had everything a Paso Doble should have in it plus more – well done Kevin for sticking to the basics! Makes for the best dance. Traditional music, traditional steps and a fabulous ending!

Although, what have the costume department done to Kevin?

My score: 10

Actual score: Craig 9, Darcey 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 = 39/40

Natalie Gumede and Artem Chigvintsev – Charleston to Bang Bang (Will.I.Am)

Well, the song was shot to pieces there. Goodness me.

Charleston. Yes. Well. It was fast but it wasn’t the furious tempo of Sophie’s or Abbey’s although it had all the technique needed in there. Not the most inventive choreography from Artem but hey, it was good. I know Gatsby is 1920 is Charleston but…I didn’t feel it. Sorry ringa.

My score: 8

Actual score: Craig 9, Darcey 10, Len 10, Bruno 10 = 39/40
